To help propagate plankton growth, CIAA implements the use of fertilizer on a few select lakes. The application is done during the open water months - usually June, July, and August. The increased nutruients stimulate phytoplankton growth, which in turn provide food for zooplankton, the main food source for salmon fry and smolts. In conjunction with the fertilizer applications, CIAA also monitors a number of lakes by collecting limnological data from May to September. Parameters such as nutrient level, dissolved oxygen, and temperature are recorded and used to calculated the fertilizer application for the next season. Moreover, CIAA can monitor the condition of the lake and use the data to determine the appropriate number of fry to release without disrupting the system.
