Hatchery management and operation is a large component of the work that CIAA preforms.  The hatchery facilitates a means for CIAA to supplement or rehabilitate the salmon resource in Cook Inlet.  When properly managed, the hachery can be an extremely efficient tool for salmon production.  Eggs incubating within the hatchery are protected from predators and are not exposed to flooding, sedimentation, or other disasterous occurances.  As a result, the success of hatchery incubated eggs reaching the fry stage is greatly increased.  Once hatched, fry are fed for a short period of time before being released.  In other instances, fry may be reared within the hatchery for a year before being released as a "one check" smolt.
